Strong & Positive

As I believe I have mentioned before, I have personal relationships with many of the people I encounter at my job – more than just a “Hello! How are you?” exchange. They know about my life and I know about theirs.

Monday night, I had a pretty personal conversation with one of the gentlemen. Near the end of the conversation, he said something to me that stuck with me – “it just doesn’t make sense why bad things happen to good people. You’re a nice person who goes to church every Sunday, respects people, and is just an overall good person. Why anything bad ever happened to you, it makes no sense.”

As humans, we all sin. The only one who is void of sin, died on the cross for our transgressions and rose from the dead.

The “why do bad things happen to good people” debate is one that is going to last for quite a long time. There are many possible “answers” – many theological explanations and many logical. With there being so many answers, I do not think a conclusion will ever be able to be made.

With that being said, I am not even going to attempt to come up with some sort of answer or reasoning. Because, honestly…does it matter? Whatever happened, happened. The only thing you can do is take something from the dreadful or tragic or unhappy (or whatever emotion it was) situation, learn from it, and move on. If you try to figure out the reason, I guarantee that you will go crazy!

Now with dealing with a particular incident, you can either deal with it in a negative or (seemingly) positive light. You can be all doom and gloom about the situation (which will probably not get you anywhere!!) or you can take the best from it, make the most of it, and deal with the reminisce of the situation with some poise.

If you were in a situation that people would not even want to be in if you paid them, I understand that it is tough to put on a happy face and pretend that everything is okay. Please believe me when I say that I know. Dealing with the situation with negative thoughts/reactions in no way makes you feel any better or helps you cope. You might think that bad mouthing the situation is helping you to cope and vent out your anger or frustration, but are you really doing anything productive? Nope! You are just intensifying the negativity.

Beyond the unhappy situation you might have been placed in, there is so much beauty and amazing things that we are blessed with. You do not even have to go far to look for it! Look outside at the clouds or listen to your child laugh or hug a friend! I could go on and on and on! There are so many absolutely wonderful things that surround you on a day to day basis. Why not get lost in these blissful things, instead of being Negative Nancy? Being a Negative Nancy only brings you down. Being lost in bliss brings you up! It also brings up those around you and helps set such a brilliant example to others.

As a Christ follower, it is so important to hold on to Romans 8:28 – “and we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (NASB.)

When you immerse yourself in that scripture and in positive thoughts, you not only can…but you WILL…see a light at the end of the very dark tunnel and get through your situation with poise. You will also be a person who others deem as strong and positive. Hmm…strong and positive…or Negative Nancy? Strong and positive, please!
